Fraction Calculator

Find the least common denominator (LCD) of both fractions, convert each fraction to an equivalent fraction with that denominator, then add or subtract the numerators and keep the common denominator. Finally, simplify the result by dividing numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. This calculator shows every one of those steps automatically.

To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators together and the denominators together, then simplify. To divide fractions, flip the second fraction (find its reciprocal) and multiply instead — dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal.

Multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the numerator, and place that total over the original denominator. For example, 2 3/4 becomes (2×4+3)/4 = 11/4. Enter the whole-number part in the "whole" box and this calculator converts it automatically.

Divide the numerator by the denominator to get the decimal value. To convert that decimal to a percentage, multiply by 100 and add a percent sign. The Calculate and Fraction → Decimal panels show both automatically alongside the simplified fraction and mixed-number forms.

5/3 is already an improper fraction in lowest terms (its GCD is 1). As a mixed number it is 1 2/3, since 3 goes into 5 once with a remainder of 2. As a decimal it is approximately 1.6667, or about 166.67%.
