How to calculate discount percentage

Discount % = ((Original Price − Sale Price) / Original Price) × 100

Example: Original $120, Sale $90
Discount % = ((120 − 90) / 120) × 100 = 25%

Final price after % off:

Final Price = Original Price × (1 − Discount% / 100)

Example: $120 with 25% off
Final Price = 120 × (1 − 0.25) = 120 × 0.75 = $90

Original price from sale price:

Original Price = Sale Price / (1 − Discount% / 100)

Example: Sale price $90, discount was 25%
Original Price = 90 / (1 − 0.25) = 90 / 0.75 = $120

How do stacked discounts work?

Stacked discounts apply one after another — each new discount is calculated on the already-reduced price, not the original. This means the combined effect is always less than simply adding the percentages.

Example: 20% off then 10% off on a $100 item:

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate percent off?
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100, then subtract from the original. Example: $80 with 25% off → $80 × 0.25 = $20 saved → final price = $60. Or use the calculator above.
How do I calculate the original price before discount?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount/100). If you paid $75 after a 25% discount: original = $75 / 0.75 = $100. Use the "Find Original Price" tab above.
Is 20% off then 10% off the same as 30% off?
No. Stacked discounts are not additive. 20% off then 10% off gives an effective 28% discount, not 30%. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price. Use the Stacked Discounts tab to calculate any combination.
How to calculate discount percentage in Excel?
Use the formula =((A1-B1)/A1)*100 where A1 is the original price and B1 is the sale price. For the final price after a discount: =A1*(1-C1/100) where C1 is the discount percentage.
How do I calculate percentage off a price?
Divide the discount amount by the original price, then multiply by 100. Example: an item was $50, now $35. Discount = $15. Percentage off = (15/50) × 100 = 30% off.
