Character Counter
Count characters as you type — with and without spaces — plus words, sentences and lines, and see live limits for X, SMS, meta tags and more. Nothing is uploaded; it all runs in your browser.

How the character counter works
The counter measures every character you type, including spaces, punctuation and line breaks — that's the Characters figure, and it's what platforms like X (Twitter) and SMS count against their limits. Without spaces removes all whitespace, which some forms and assignments ask for. It also shows words, sentences, lines and paragraphs so you can check length at a glance.
Why character limits matter
Many places cap how much text you can use: an SEO title tag is usually trimmed by Google after about 60 characters and a meta description after about 160; an X post allows 280; a single SMS is 160. Staying within these keeps your titles from being cut off in search results and your posts from being split or rejected. The live bars above turn red the moment you go over.
Frequently asked questions
How do I count characters in a piece of text?
Paste or type your text above. The Characters figure updates instantly and counts everything including spaces; the Without spaces figure excludes whitespace.
Does the character count include spaces?
Yes. The main Characters total includes spaces, punctuation and line breaks, matching how X and SMS count. A separate figure shows the count without spaces.
What's the character limit for a tweet (X post)?
A standard X post allows 280 characters. The live limit bar above shows how many you've used and how many remain.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Counting happens entirely in your browser, so your text never leaves your device.
