Where does robots.txt end and llms.txt begin?▾

      
Robots.txt tells crawlers what they are and are not allowed to request. llms.txt does the opposite job: it tells AI systems what your site is about and points them to the content you most want them to read. One restricts access, the other provides curated signal.

    

    

      
Is llms.txt an official web standard?▾

      
Not yet in the way robots.txt or sitemap.xml are. It was proposed by Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI in September 2024 and has seen adoption from companies like Anthropic, Mintlify, and Vercel, but it isn't governed by a body like the IETF or W3C, and not every AI system commits to reading it.
